==St. Louis Browns==
Sanford signed with the St. Louis Browns in . Despite having made three appearances with the Browns in , he was essentially a career minor leaguer with a 55–61 record and 3.74 earned run average in the Browns' farm system when his career was interrupted by service in World War II. He returned to the Browns in , and went 15–10 with a 2.74 ERA for the Toledo Mud Hens to earn a September call up to St. Louis. He pitched shutouts in his first two major league starts against the New York Yankees〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=St. Louis Browns 1, New York Yankees 0 )〕 and Chicago White Sox.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=St. Louis Browns 2, Chicago White Sox 0 )
His success against the Yankees was fleeting, as he allowed successive home runs to Charlie Keller, Joe DiMaggio and Johnny Lindell during a relief appearance against the Yanks during the season.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Yanks Tie Homer Mark )〕 Still, he pitched well enough against them to catch the eye of Yankees General Manager George Weiss.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Browns to Sell Fred Sanford to the Yankees )〕 At the Winter meetings, he and Roy Partee were dealt to the Yankees for Red Embree, Sherm Lollar and Dick Starr plus $100,000.
